Yet another revolutionary software for converting InDesign to HTML. Yawn.

Aug 20th, 2014 by Max Tokman

Today we're reviewing IN5, put out by a software company whose name we will not mention. It is supposedly another magical app that converts InDesign files in HTML5, so all you have to do is design the darn thing in InDesign and voila! you have a website.

Where is that “any key” on my keyboard?

Aug 12th, 2014 by Max Tokman

True story from some years back: we were transferring project documentation to a client and have hit a wall, their point person taking the project over was not able to get through the very first screen of the application.  Time went by, and we just could not figure out their issue, as everything was working fine on our end.  Finally, a conference call with multiple participants ensued, and the client spoke:

- Well, it says here to “hit any key to continue”, but I do not have a key labeled “any key” on my keyboard.

Faster sites are way better than slower sites

Jul 28th, 2014 by Max Tokman

When comparing Photoshop and InDesign as web design tools, we have to think back to their history. InDesign was meant to offer same multi-page layout and type controls. Over time, it provided web-friendly HTML and CSS export. Photoshop was an image editing software, even as it added typography, vector objects and web-friendly color space and export.

Case study: PDF is not always the best way to get approval on creative

Jul 14th, 2014 by Max Tokman

Some time ago, we completed a beta version of responsive site and turned it over to agency’s client for review.  The client came back with a number of issues, all centered around font and image sizes that were apparently not to spec for one of responsive states.  Naturally, we were concerned as this indicated a significant lapse in our QA process.  Upon closer look there was nothing to resolve, as our work was a pixel-match to Photoshop files provided by the agency; the mystery deepened, as there were clearly issues on the client’s side which we were not seeing.

How Adobe Muse is completely changing design and coding for web?

Jun 18th, 2014 by Max Tokman

Short answer - it is not.  Adobe is always torn between noble aspirations of creating unified design / development software and the less elevated urge to make money by selling that same tool as multiple products.  Hence the ongoing parade of various stiffs, headlined by ImageReady and closely followed by Fireworks, that have either gone to oblivion or are on the way there.  Adobe Muse awaits a fate no different.
